HEAR THE CALL OF THE WILD: The best PODCASTS to fuel your adventurous spirit.

If you are anything like me and you spend a bunch of time commuting Podcasts are a great way to fill in time, fuel your wanderlust, learn more about the wild and get inspired.

I love to mix up my podcast listening and would love some suggestions of new podcasts to listen to so please add your suggestions to the comments section.  Below are some of the podcasts that inspire me and fuel my adventurous spirit:

DIRTBAG DIARIES:  is known for its very real stories of the outdoors. With episodes focused on outdoor activities, conservation efforts and stepping out of your comfort zone, the podcast presents the outdoors as an outlet for exploration, discovery, perseverance and humour.  This was one of the first podcasts I listened to and has filled many a drive to the Blue Mountains of a weekend.

Some favourite episodes include this one by Anya Miller.  Anya shares the story of her first sleeping bag, and the person she became with the help of the women’s medium, right-hand zip cocoon. http://dirtbagdiaries.com/the-shorts-sleeping-bag-metamorphosis/ by Anya Miller

12 year old Abby Holcombe kayaking the Grand Canyon: http://dirtbagdiaries.com/winnebago-warriors/

Mary Ann is the daughter of Indian immigrants, she’s gay and she has embarked on a six-month, 6,600-mile bike tour across the US:  Here her story at: http://dirtbagdiaries.com/pedal-strokes-perspective/

SPARTA CHICKS RADIO: Each week host Jen Brown shares inspiring stories coupled with practical, tried-and-tested-in-the-real-world advice from professional athletes, everyday women chasing their dreams to successful women from all walks of life.  I love this one for the inspiring Aussie women Jen shines the spotlight on.  Favourite Sparta Chicks Radio episodes:

Caroline Pemberton a self-proclaimed “goofy tomboy girl with messy hair”, Caroline grew up with two older, outdoorsy brothers and spent her childhood chasing them around, wanting to be one of the boys and trying to keep up.  She has made the unique transition from Miss Australia to Miss Adventure. https://www.spartachicks.com/056-caroline-pemberton/caroline-pemberton-on-sparta-chicks-radio/

Sarah Davis who is preparing to be the first woman to paddle the Nile: https://www.spartachicks.com/tag/paddle-the-nile/

Lucy Barnard is attempting to become the first woman to walk the length of the world.  Enough said  https://www.spartachicks.com/054-lucy-barnard/

THE MOTH:  I first listened to this podcast while holed up in a very picturesque swamp somewhere along the trail to Mt Anne in Tasmania.  A great way to wait out a storm The Moth stories are true, as remembered by the storyteller and always told live.  The Moth is not an adventure podcast but the stories are real, raw and resonate.  Be warned though – tissues are often required and listening on planes can result in spontaneous laughter or spontaneous tears in equal measure.

Some all time favourite episodes to listen to:

Cathy Olkin must troubleshoot a problem more than 4 billion miles away.

Ann Daniels  about training to become a polar pioneer.

Suzi Ronson A hairdresser from Beckenham leaves it all behind to run away with a proverbial circus.

Liz Allen: A whiney kid on a camping trip.

Noreen Riols is recruited into the world of Secret Agents on special missions during WWII.

SHE EXPLORES: is a Podcast for and about women who are inspired by time spent outside. This heartfelt podcast provides an uplifting look at the strong women shaping the outdoor industry.  With an eye towards the creatives (the podcast often features photographers, writers, and artists who happen to be incredible outdoor athletes and influencers), She Explores is a resource for women of all backgrounds to make a go of it in the outdoors in their own way, whether that means taking your first overnight hiking trip or starting a women’s climbing group.

Episodes like “Fat and Outdoorsy”,  “Offline: In Open Air” and “Are you allowed to change your dreams?” give you an idea of the variety of topics to expect.

We’d love you to share some of your favourite podcasts with us.  They don’t have to be adventure or female related, just great listening.
