Paddling into Adventure: Aimee Jules’ Journey from Photographer to Filmmaker

Aimee Jules' Journey from Photographer to Filmmaker

In the picturesque Motueka Valley of New Zealand, nestled by a tranquil river, lives Aimee Jules – a professional photographer turned filmmaker whose debut project is making waves in the adventure film scene. Her film “Paddle X” is set to feature in the upcoming Gutsy Girls Adventure Film Tour across New Zealand this August, marking an exciting new chapter in Aimee’s creative journey.

Born and raised in sunny Nelson, Aimee attended Nelson College for Girls before pursuing higher education at Victoria University of Wellington. Her roots in New Zealand’s stunning landscapes have clearly influenced her passion for the outdoors and adventure.

“I feel the most alive when I’m in the backcountry,” Aimee enthuses. “It doesn’t have to be the hardest or most technical terrain, but I’m always stoked to be there.”

Living in one of the world’s most beautiful regions, Aimee takes full advantage of the diverse adventure opportunities at her doorstep. While hiking trips currently top her list, she also looks forward to rock climbing sessions in Golden Bay during the summer months.

Aimee’ transition from photography to filmmaking came about serendipitously. Attending an adventure film evening hosted by Dean Parker, she reconnected with Britt, a fellow adventurer she had previously travelled with. Learning about Britt’s upcoming paddling challenge, Aimee saw an opportunity to dive into filmmaking. “It really felt like a ‘meant to be’ kind of moment!” she recalls.

The filming process was not without its challenges. Aimee recounts a mishap where crucial interview audio from the paddle was accidentally overwritten on the drive home. Aimee recounts that “Instead of these epic interviews I had 3 hours of me driving home and then 6 hours of silence in my office recorded.”  However, this setback led to a creative solution, with Britt narrating the paddle experience the following day – a change that Aimee now views positively.

One of the most memorable moments during the film’s production came unexpectedly. A postponed paddle resulted in an impromptu “lay-day” in Picton, filled with team bonding activities like jumping off the wharf, swimming, and even a “secret mission” to make signs to cheer Britt on. This unplanned day proved invaluable in preparing the team for the challenge ahead.

With “Paddle X,” Aimee has not only documented an inspiring athletic feat but also paddled into new creative waters herself. “I am definitely hooked and can’t wait to tell more stories through film,” she says, hinting at an exciting future in adventure filmmaking.

As “Paddle X” prepares to inspire audiences across New Zealand, it’s clear that Aimee Aimee has found her own adventure – one that takes place behind the camera, capturing the spirit of gutsy women pushing their limits in the great outdoors.
