As we mark our 10th anniversary, we’re spotlighting ten extraordinary adventure women whose stories remind us what becomes possible when opportunity meets determination.
Eileen Gu: Skiing’s Brightest Multi-hyphenate
Some athletes chase medals. Eileen Gu seems to chase possibility.
Olympic champion, Stanford student, fashion model, public speaker, pianist and self-confessed dumpling enthusiast, Gu has built a career that refuses to fit neatly into one category. At only 22, she has already reshaped expectations of what an elite athlete can be — proving that ambition doesn’t have to stay in a single lane.
A Childhood Between Cultures
Gu was born in San Francisco to an American father and a Chinese mother, and grew up navigating two cultures with ease. Winters often meant early mornings and long drives to the snowfields around Lake Tahoe, where she first learned to ski.
Like many great adventure stories, hers began with simple joy — sliding downhill as fast as possible and seeing what might happen next.
Her mother, Yan Gu, played a major role in nurturing that curiosity. A former ski instructor, she introduced Eileen to the mountains and encouraged her to explore broadly: skiing, school, music, reading, public speaking. The message was simple — do everything with enthusiasm.
Gu took that advice seriously.

Talent That Couldn’t Be Ignored
By her early teens, it was clear she had something special on skis. Freestyle skiing demands creativity as much as courage, and Gu brought both. Her style combined technical precision with a playful sense of experimentation — the kind of skiing that makes spectators lean forward in their seats.
As she rose through the ranks of international competition, she began competing across three disciplines: slopestyle, big air and halfpipe — an unusual and demanding combination.
Then came the moment that introduced her to a global audience.
A Historic Olympic Debut
At the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, Gu delivered one of the most memorable performances of the Games.
Her medal haul was extraordinary:

- 🏅 Gold – Halfpipe
- 🥈 Silver – Slopestyle
The big air final has already become part of Olympic folklore. Sitting in silver medal position before her final run, Gu decided to attempt a trick she had never landed in competition — a double cork 1620.
She landed it cleanly.
The crowd erupted. Gu threw her skis into the air and laughed in disbelief. It was the kind of moment that captures why freestyle skiing is so thrilling: bold decisions, all-or-nothing commitment and the reward of pulling off something extraordinary.
A Life Beyond the Slopes
Gu’s life away from skis is every bit as dynamic.
She plays classical piano. She writes. She enjoys cooking and frequently posts about food — especially dumplings — on social media. And when she’s not competing or studying, she has built an impressive presence in fashion, appearing on the covers of publications including Vogue.
Rather than seeing these pursuits as distractions, Gu embraces them as part of a full and creative life.
“I’m never just one thing,” she has said.
That philosophy resonates with many young women who are often told they must specialise early and narrow their ambitions.
A Bridge Between Worlds
Gu also represents something broader than sport.
Fluent in English and Mandarin, she moves comfortably between cultures and audiences. Her ability to connect across borders has made her one of the most recognisable athletes of her generation.
Whether speaking at international events or engaging with young fans online, she consistently encourages curiosity, resilience and confidence — particularly among girls who may not yet see themselves represented in sport.
